INTER CLUB
The Midland Division of the Senior Cup was held in the Glenns over the weekend. On Saturday the Birr team set the ball rolling with their match against Tullamore which was won by Birr by 4/1. In the afternoon Birr overcame Mount Temple in the quarter finals winning the first 3 matches with the final 2 called in. In the Sunday morning semi-finals Birr lost out to Mullingar with the deciding match going to the 18th. Certainly our local team played some super golf over the two days with all members of the panel in splendid form. The panel of Seamas Breen, Billy Donlon, Michael Horan, Declan Gath, Stephen Brummell, Billy McGarry and Roger Byrne is to be congratulated on some excellent performances. The managers were Billy Donlon and Seamas Breen. Incidentally heartiest congratulations also to our two Midland golfers Shane and Colm on their brilliant golf at the British Open.

TOM HAYES RIP
Members learned with deep regret during the week of the death of Tom Hayes at the ripe age of 93. Tom’s association with The Glenns went back to the early 1920s when his mother was in charge of catering for the Club. Tom’s recollections of those far off days are well recorded in Tom Nestor’s invaluable history of the Club. When Tom and his brother Adam retired from farming they built a beautiful home adjacent to the golf course and concentrated on improving their game. Tom won Michael Ashe’s Captain’s Prize in a gale in 1983 and in 1986 he was selected as President. He was made an Honorary Member in 1997. Tom Enright in his address at the funeral service emphasised Tom’s great love of the Club and his high regard for its members. His golfing companions John Gowing, Ailbe Doorley, Paddy Grealy, Denis Doorley and the late Brian Graham and Ted Foley enjoyed each others company and enlivened many debates. It was fitting that such large numbers of the golfing fraternity and neighbours attended the funeral services on both days. We extend our sympathy to his niece Monica and her family and we can say with assurance, ‘Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann.’
