Captain’s Prize
Our Captain Tom Rigney’s prize combined with the British Open provided the main talking points over the weekend. Unlike Tom Watson our leader Roger Byrne from the qualifying round did not falter on the big day. Roger who had a fantastic 62 on the first day found the going more difficult on Sunday but he still returned a 72 to leave him four shots ahead of Michael Lyons one of Birr’s steadiest and long standing golfers. Sadly Michael had visions of emulating Tom Watson. Unfortunately the day was unkind to both. At the presentation the Captain thanked all who took part and congratulated the winners who had to face difficult conditions on Sunday afternoon. He thought Roger was a most deserving winner as with his opening 62 he deserved centre stage on the podium. He was particularly pleased with the condition of the course and noted with satisfaction that the new course and greens held up especially well and were a credit to the course staff and the course committee. He praised the Men’s Committee for orgainising the competition so efficiently and all others who helped to make his day so pleasant and enjoyable. He reserved special thanks for Shannon Development and their manager Denis Duggan who sponsored the Captain’s prize. Denis in reply said his company were delighted to be associated with golf in the Midlands, stating that one of Shannon Development’s main aims was to attract tourists to the area and give value for money. Denis then presented the prizes to the winners and wished all a very enjoyable evening The Captain encouraged all to take part in the Club Development Classic on 2/3 August and wished Lady Captain Mary Sullivan a very successful prize day on Sunday next.
