Senior and Junior Scratch Cups
The first major competition on the new lands took place on Sunday when the prestigious Senior Scratch Cup was played for. The event sponsored by Michael Horan’s Golf Shop, was won by Eddie McCormack from Galway with a 73 and a 69 with a four shot lead over runner up Michael Horan. In his acceptance speech Eddie was delighted to be the first winner of the Scratch Cup over the new course. While he had fond memories of playing the old course, he congratulated the Club on having the foresight to develop the new course and add to the attractions of the Glenns. Birr now had a golf course second to none and no doubt when word gets out it will become one of the most popular tracks in the land. Vice-Captain Bernard Kennedy in thanking Eddie for his kind words noted that he had received numerous favourable comments on the new course and he was especially glad to see the new greens holding up so well despite the heavy rains recently. Bernard congratulated all the winners including Roger Byrne who won the Junior Cup. In an aside he reported that the new par five proved to be the most difficult on the day with one birdie, one eagle and thirty nine bogies. The tenth was the second hardest with no birdies, thirty one pars, thirty four bogies and forty nine others. The new fourth had eleven birdies and fifty pars.
