Golfing in the Glenns

Tue, 21 Apr, 2009

End of an era
As Tom Nestor has noted in his excellent History of Birr Golf Club the members back in 1909 decided to relocate from Baronne Court in Carrig to the Glenns. A fifty-year lease was drawn up with the Earl of Rosse to 1 November 1959 with a fee of one shilling per year payable in two half-yearly installments. Since 1909 the course has remained more or less unchanged. Over the last couple of years the club embarked on major developments when lands which were acquired in the mid nineties were developed and three new fairways and greens were built. This weekend will witness the last competition on the old course with the winner of an 18h Stableford receiving a special memento to mark the end of a century in the Glenns. The new course will open on Friday 1 May with a classic run by the Parents’ Committee of Birr Community School.

Inter club
Well done to our Barton Cup team under managers Ger Gath and Paschal Troy who had a convincing win over Knightsbrook(Trim) in the Barton Cup on Saturday. The team of Ger Gath/Michael Lyons, Billy Donlon/Fintan Dolan, Roger Byrne/Jonathan Kelly, Stephen Brummell/Pat Molloy and Robbie Sheils/Paschal Troy had to play all matches at the away venue and won all five.
Hard luck to the South Leinster team who failed by the odd match in seven to overcome Tulfarris on Sunday. As all matches were played away it was a big ask to take on last year’s winners on their home turf. Our team of Aiden Farrelly, Seamas Guinan, Michael Langtry, Hubert Rigney, Louis Vaughan, Pat Gleeson and Charlie Bophy battled to the end.
The matches in early May are in the Duggan Cup v Moate and the Central Towns v Curra West. All details next week.
