Spring League
The final of the Annual Spring League sponsored by Birr Credit Union, took place on Sunday when the top eight teams drove off. The blustery conditions were no handicap and some excellent scores were returned. At the presentation that evening Captain Tom Rigney in thanking all who participated over the winter and spring, reserved special thanks for our sponsors Birr Credit Union and its representative Margaret Murphy. He noted in particular the large number of members who play over the weekends and it augurs well for the coming months when all 18 holes will come into play. Members are delighted with the progress on the new lands and greens and the Captain saw no reason why the new course should not be ready for the Community School Classic on Friday 1 May. The Captain welcomed several new members and was pleased to note that some are in the winners’ enclosure already. He paid special tributes to the course staff who are working might and main to have everything in top order for the opening. Francie Horan was thanked for organising the League during some difficult and harsh conditions. The Members’ Prize sponsored by Guinness was on the cards over the weekend. This was won by Liam Coughlan of Clareen fame. Liam a relative newcomer to the game, proved to be a very popular winner and no doubt much more will be heard from this quarter.
