Ladies Golf
2008 was always going to be a difficult year on the golf course because of the work on the course development. Restrictions were always planned and accepted by members as unavoidable, but worth enduring for a bright future. A record 37 inches of rain during the year (to date) was not anticipated. In spite of all adversity a taste of the future was enjoyed by those lucky enough to play in the Captains’ prizes and the Annual Classic – reports indicated most players found the new track even more challenging, enjoyable and scenic than they had dared to hope. Captains Colette and Paddy O’Brien, along with Presidents Michael Liffey and Bernadette McTague maintained quiet optimism and managed to inaugurate a number of social/golf events as well as the usual calendar, so, in spite of awful conditions, most people can take some good memories away. Friday Nov. 14th was the date of the last Ladies’ social – a magnificent party evening organised by Des Mulcair. A delicious dinner provided by Cathal McIntyre was followed by Charades (run by Kay Kelly & Mary Bolger - with “appropriate” prizes!) as well as Bridge (thanks to organisers Aileen Watkins & Des Mulcair). These social evenings, promoted by Lady Captain Colette and her committee, have been a feature of 2008 and have been well attended by members and some visitors. Golf for ladies is a combination of serious competition on the course, and frivolous time in the clubhouse. Colette O’Brien’s year as Lady Captain ended on Nov. 21st.. In her valedictory address, Colette paid tribute to the teams and the managers who represented Birr Lady Golfers with much success in Inter Club matches. Surviving so many matches and reaching finals and semi-finals gives cause to the hope of bringing home trophies in 2009. Golfer of the year 2008 is Siobhan Tynan. The ILGU Silver Spoon was presented to Christine Bruce; the Silver Medal to Martina O’Brien; the bronze Medal to Kay Kelly and the silver pendant to Margaret Murphy. Mary O’Sullivan was elected Lady Captain for season 2009. Mary Ryan was confirmed as new Lady President and Kathleen Doorley vice Captain. Mary Bolger remains Hon. Sec.; Ann McIntyre Handicap Sec. and Colette O’Brien takes Competition Secretary. Other committee posts are filled by Rita Delaney, Vera Smyth, Therese Kennedy, Liz Nolan, Aileen Watkins, Kay Kelly, Tory Baker & Maura Flannery. Des Mulcair and Yvonne Boland have retired. Turkey Competitions are in full swing. Once again, Flynns Supermarket in Banagher is sponsoring these Seasonal Competitions, and word is out that this great store has quality bargains not just confined to Christmas fare. It sure beats driving all the way to the North! Members may play and re-enter as often as desired, and the season will culminate on “Party Sunday” December 21st. All will be welcome – put the date in your diary - more details on this nearer the date.
