Captains’ Dinner
The dinner to honour our Captains Paddy and Colette O’Brien proved hugely successful on Saturday night last. A large gathering of members enjoyed an evening of great conviviality, excellent food and dancing into the small hours, courtesy of the Richie Burke ensemble. Incoming Captain Tom Rigney acted as MC and called on Presidents Michael and Bernie to introduce the captains who thanked all for attending and said how glad they were to have led the Club during the year. They enjoyed every moment of their captaincy and were happy to see that many developments had take place during the year. They thanked Cathal McIntyre and the catering staff for producing such wonderful fare and the House Committee for organising the occasion.

The McGarry Cup
This week the junior golfers have an opportunity to win the beautiful cup presented by Michael and Christy McGarry. It is expected that all our juniors will compete to add this splendid trophy to their cabinet. This is a very generous gesture by the McGarry brothers who have had a long and distinguished record with our club.
Ladies Golf
The final Hamper competition of the 2008 season is being played on Wednesday next October 29th. This year, the Thatch bar and Restaurant in Crinkle is sponsoring the prize. The Thatch has been a generous sponsor to the Ladies at Birr Golf Club for many years, and a Hamper Competition seems a particularly apt occasion given the wonderful fare served in the Thatch Restaurant in all seasons. The “Turkey” competitions start next Sunday and members are reminded to play at least three times in order to qualify for Party Sunday before Christmas. In spite of a second consecutive year of wet miserable weather, and in spite of the course alterations curtailing the use of certain parts of the track, the Ladies of Birr have managed to enjoy their golf. It has been heartening to witness so many people new to golf featuring in competition, and while our teams ended the season without a trophy, we achieved more wins than at any time in the recent past. Lady Captain Colette O’Brien has led the club through a difficult year with infectious good humour, and the turn out for the dinner held in honour of Mr Captain Paddy O’Brien & Lady Captain Colette on Saturday Oct 24th was a small tribute from the members to their great year’s work.
Sympathy
The members extend deepest sympathy to Paddy Mellsop and his family on the death of his sister Patricia O’Callaghan last week. Also to Peter Pardy and his family on the death of his sister Elsie Pardy last week.
