Golfing in the Glenns

Triumphs all round
The victory bells were heard loud and clear around the Glenns over the weekend when our Tudenham team emerged triumphant in Mullingar and our representatives captured the Loughnane Trophy in the Offaly Inter Club Championship.
The Tudenhams in defence of the Mullingar-sponsored Cup came up against a determined Delvin Castle on Saturday. With most matches going to the finish Birr came through by the narrowest of margins, winning 3/2. Underfoot conditions were not ideal after all the heavy rains but some excellent chipping and putting kept us to the fore throughout the afternoon. At the meal and function that evening Birr Captain praised the team for successfully defending the trophy and noted that our team had qualified from an original entry of 30 teams and on the way had accounted for Moate, New Forest, Portarlington. He was extremely proud of their achievements and thanked Managers Tony McTague and Tom Rigney for all their hard work. He also thanked the sponsors Wallace Recycling and the Mullingar Club for their splendid organisation and hospitality. Manager Tony McTague in congratulating his team praised Delvin Castle for their sportsmanship and he was convinced that the trophy will be theirs within a year or two. He admired their positive approach to the game. He just hoped that Birr would not be their opponents. The winning team was: Michael Yates/Jonathan Kelly, Seamas Breen/Paddy Kirwan. Roger Byrne/Pat Madden, Robbie Sheils/Pat Molloy and Billy Donlon/Jonathan Yates.

Meanwhile back in Birr Francie Horan’s team were taking on the might of Castle Bearna, Tullamore, Esker Hills and Edenderry in the Offaly Championship for the Loughnane Trophy. The team composed of youth and experience, won the day with 7 points to spare over Tullamore. Representing Birr were: Shane Guinan/Tony Nevin 39 pts. Pat Maher /Seamas Coakley 43 pts. Ultan Ashe/Coleman Loughnane 47 pts Tomas Bolger/Gavin Young 41 pts. Michael Ashe/ Hubert Rigney 45 pts. and Matt Feenane/ Martin Young 48 pts. At the function Michael Ashe in congratulating the team thanked all the Offaly Clubs for their participation and noted that even though the idea of an Offaly Inter Club Competition originated in Birr during Sean Loughnane’s Captaincy year this was the first time Birr won the event. Sean explained the origin of the trophy and was glad to see that Francie and Michael took charge of promotion. He was happy that the idea took hold as the competition brought golfers from several areas and categories together.

Ladies
The Glenns Trophy Competition held in Birr Golf Club on Wed. 15 October attracted 34 teams with 13 counties represented, proving without doubt what a wonderful success this competition has been. After a wonderful day of golf enjoyed by everyone, we had very deserving winners in Athy Golf Club followed closely by Ballinasloe while Slievenamon was 3rd and the Heath in 4th place. The ladies were full of praise for our course and many
visiting for the first time expressed the desire to be involved in the Glenns Trophy again next year. It was a wonderful social occasion – the brainchild of Mona Collins. Our sincere thanks to sponsor Peter Fox of Fox’s Pharmacy who has been very generous in his continued sponsorship since the inception of this popular event. Proceeds from a raffle held in conjunction with the Glenns Trophy raised 620 euro for donation to the hospice in Birr Nursing Care Unit.
Lady Captain Colette O’Brien thanked all who helped on the day and extended a special ‘thank you’ to Lady President Bernie McTague, Ann McIntyre and Vera Smyth for all their hard work in organising the competition.
Hamper: Jim Cashen’s competition running all this week with re-entry.
Hamper: The Thatch Restaurant Competition from Sat. 25 to Fri. 31 October with re-entry.

Sympathy
The members extend deepest sympathy to Ambrose Hughes and his family on the death of his sister Eileen Fahy in Tynagh recently. Also to Dick Quinn and his family on the death of his brother Paudge in England.
