Hamper Season
Amazing how rapidly the Hamper Season comes around. The hotels, restaurants and shops are busily engaged in promoting their Christmas offers, something which forces our competitions’ committee into action. This weekend sees the start of the much sought after hampers when the Brosna Press sponsored prize will be played for. This will be over 18 holes with placing on the fairways and clean and drop in the semi. With roughly a dozen hampers on offer between now and Christmas, members are well catered for.
Tudenham Cup
Preparations are in train for the final of the Tudenham Cup versus Delvin Castle in Mullingar on Sat. 18th. (Please note change of date). Manager Tony McTague has organised a number of practice rounds in Mullingar and is confident his team will be fit, willing and able on the day. The day starts with an 8.45 am breakfast and a bonding session in our Club. Teeing off time will be at 12.30. Birr has an excellent record in this competition and the team is very confident of carrying on the winning tradition.
Offaly Championship
This very popular inter club competition was inaugurated during Sean Loughnane’s year as Captain and has been held in Birr since. The format consists of twelve players divided into four categories according to handicap. These are: Cat. A Plus to 5; Cat. B 6 to 12; Cat. C 13 to 18 and Cat. D 19 and over. Manager Francie Horan has selected a very strong team for the day which begins at 9 am on Sat. 18 Oct. Cat. A is Pat Maher, Billy Donlon and Ultan Ashe. Cat.B is Tomas Bolger. Michael Ashe and Matt Feenane. Cat. C is Jonathan Yates, Gavin Young and Hubert Rigney and Cat. D is Pat Gleeson, Coleman Loughnane and Eamon Moore.
Ladies’ Golf
The gallant Boyne team were finally beaten in the semi-finals v Edenderry last Wednesday. Congratulations to Manager/Captain Mary Grennan and to all the ladies involved in the team in all the matches. Birr Golf Club was represented magnificently in the inter club matches this year, getting to three semi finals, and there is no doubt the talent is in our club to bring home a trophy (or more) in 2009. The competitors for the Open Two Person team event sponsored by Pascal and Eleanor Campbell on Sunday Oct. 5th enjoyed wonderful sunny conditions. The winning score of 47 points was returned by Ann McIntyre playing with Sheila Brennan ; 2nd (also 47 points but beaten on final 9 holes) were Mary and Sheila Sullivan; 3rd Rita Enright & Denise O’Hare (46); 4th Joe Conniffe & Carina Gleeson (43); 5th Maura Flannery & Aileen Watkins (43). The sponsor Eleanor Campbell presented sumptuous hampers to the winners. She and Pascal have been very generously sponsoring this Hamper competition for some years and the ladies are hugely grateful for the opportunity it brings for a great day’s golf with such a prize to win. The prizes for the Bookies’ prize were also presented on Sunday evening by Bernard Kennedy. He and Tom Rigney formed a lively efficient team of bookmakers for Lady Captain’s & Lady President’s prizes 2008. Both the competition (prizes were generous vouchers for meals at the Thatch Restaurant) and the wagers were enjoyed by all. The winner, Margaret Murphy, will undoubtedly enjoy a great meal out. The Ann Broderick Conquer Cancer prize played over 9 holes with 2 cards was won by Christine Bruce, and this trophy was also presented. The Lancome Competition to aid Breast Cancer will be played this coming Wednesday Oct 8th & Saturday Oct 11th. Wednesday October 15th will see 34 visiting clubs compete for the popular Glenns Trophy. Birr will be represented by Anne Kenny & Mona Collins and Mary O’Gorman & Yvonne Boland. Doreen McKenna & Rita Enright will be the reserve subs. Another hamper, this time sponsored by Jim Cashen will be played for on Sat. Oct.18th Wed. Oct. 22nd.
