Ladies’ Golf
Another week of awful weather caused the indefinite postponement of the Boyne Trophy Semi-finals. Nevertheless 25 members braved the unkind conditions to play for the prize donated by the late Lorna Hogan’s family which was won by Yvonne Claffey with 39points; 2nd Kay Kelly, 36points, 3rd Mary Lonergan 34 points –(on back 9 from Pauline Needham who also scored 34). Sunday’s dreadful wet cold day was a disappointment for all, but the Open Competition sponsored by A Sportsman’s Dream in Nenagh was supported by 43 players – a tribute surely to the popularity of Siobhan Tynan as well as the desire to acquire the opportunity of selecting special sportswear in her excellent shop. The winner was Patrice Delaney (Birr) (4) 38pts net; 2nd Carina Gleeson (Birr)(34) 35pts net; Gross Anne Kenny(Birr) (7) 23pts gross; 3rd Mabel Conroy (Portumna)(24) 32pts; 4th Tory Baker (Birr)(15) 32pts. The 9-hole competition for men was won by Sean Stone with 16 points; 2nd Eric Byrne, 14 points. This coming week sees the playing of Lady President Bernadette McTague’s competition on Saturday Sept.20th. This major prize is once more very kindly sponsored by James Hamill, Ford Dealer in Ferbane. The run-up to this important event starts on Thursday - all ladies are invited to play a 9-hole competition on Thursday – enter any time all day. Coffee will be served all day in the club house to raise funds for Conquer Cancer. Prizes for 7 competitions already played will be presented at 8 pm. Members look forward to the opportunity to meet the sponsors in a congenial atmosphere. Following the formal presentations, the draw for Saturday’s event will be made, and the Bookies will be taking bets on the winner. Saturday’s play for this will take place from 11.30 am. A buffet supper at 7 pm provides the opportunity for all to skip cooking at home and to meet and compare experiences of the day in anticipation of Presentation of Prizes. Naturally, attention will also be on the television screen showing the Ryder Cup at Valhalla, and later in the evening there will also be music. All in all it is a big week for Ladies’ Golf and best wishes to our dedicated and dignified Lady President Bernadette McTague. The weather forecast as of now is excellent......
