Good news
The news that all members have been waiting for is that the newly developed lands will be open for the Fourth Annual Development Classic sponsored by Michael Horan Sports Shop on Sunday and Monday 3 & 4 August. Some extra work still needs to be done on the 11th and 18th and this should be completed within the next couple of weeks. The Development Committee also intends opening the new course for the Captains’ Prizes in mid August. The members have generously supported the Classic since the beginning and they are delighted to see that so much progress has been made in recent years. All are encouraged to enter teams, sponsor holes and tees and help with the organising of the event. Time sheets are in the locker rooms and further information can be had from Francie Horan. Away were: Billy Donlon/Tim Kenny, Michael Ashe/ Dennis Duffy and Tom Wright/Tony McTague.
Hard luck on our Senior Cup team in the qualifying section at New Forest at the weekend. They won their opening match against Esker Hills but fell to the Curragh in the afternoon. The team was: Billy Donlon, Seamas Breen, Michael Horan, JohnDwyer and Declan Gath with Michael Horan as manager.
Congratulations
Heartiest congratulation to Patrice Delaney on her selection on to the Irish Girls’ team who will be playing in Panmore, Scotland on 9/10Aug. in the Home Internationals. We wish Patrice every success. Great to see another member of our Club taking a place on the International scene.
Ladies Golf
The second annual Birr Ladies’ Golf Match Play Challenge between Offaly and Tipperary took place on Saturday July 19th. Tipperary was overjoyed to prise the championship away from Offaly this year in 9 hard fought matches – winning 5! This event, while only in its 2nd year is clearly becoming a popular event in our fixture list; it is the brainchild of Georgina Chambers, Ann Frawley and Tom Rigney who provided the most generous sponsorship this year and last. Georgina and Ann represent Bearhug products as well as Lorpen Socks. The Bear hug range includes Basketball products as well as Sports Swimwear, Caps and scarves. The Lorpen socks brand is well known to all our members, and we all recognise how important footwear is to minimise pain at the end of 18 golf holes; quality socks and shoes are vital! Tom, (our popular Mr. Vice Captain), -Auctioneer - from Banagher can be relied on to achieve sales of all property in these difficult times and moreover to provide the soundest of advice on the acquisition or sale of any such asset. The challenge match is an event where high and low handicapped members join to compete in a really fun and social atmosphere. The event, (in great weather for a change), was greatly enjoyed by all who participated, and was followed by a prize-giving ceremony in the clubhouse. In the unavoidable absence of the sponsors, Gemma Butler stood in to present the trophy to victorious Tipperary. This was followed by prize giving for some of the recent competitions. The 18 hole competition recently sponsored by Cameo Beauty of Main Street Birr was won by Mary Bolger with 43 points. What a score! Now all know how she comes to have such peaches and cream complexion, and how her grooming is so superb, with her prize of pampering by Breege Rigney at Cameo. We are reliably informed that Cameo can even provide mud treatments should our weather fail to continue delivering same on the golf course! Ladies are truly lucky to have such sponsors to provide prizes for winners of competitions that we all so enjoy playing in. On the same day, Siobhan Tynan, Rita Delaney & Liz Pardy qualified to play in the Valerie Doyle Memorial later in the season. Cathal McIntyre’s sponsored prize played for on June 14th & 18th was also presented to Liz Nolan with Gemma Butler & Ann McIntyre in runner up spots. The ladies appreciate Cathal’s cooking when they come in ravenously hungry after a round of golf, and increasingly, non-members are discovering Birr Golf Club’s restaurant. Monday July21st sees the Boyne team play in the quarter final against Rathdowney. Mary Grennan and her team are fancied strongly to take a place in the Semi-finals, and we are proud of them and wish them success. July 23rd – Club Competition – draws at 10am & 2pm – play after 4pm by own arrangement. Michael Horans prize (Medal) will be played for on Saturday July 26th & Wednesday 30th. – Usual arrangements for both days. The following week Molloys Pub are kindly sponsoring a prize once again. The Club Classic (with the new holes in play) is on Sunday August 3rd & Monday August 4th. It is important that members and friends book Tee times early – phone 0579120082. Francie Horan will provide all details.
Sympathy
The members extend deepest sympathy to Carmel O’Donnell and her family on the death of her husband Des. He joined the Club in the early ‘70s and played a very significant part in the running of the Glenns over the years. He was Captain in 1981 and President in 1994. He spent many years on the various committees and even took on the difficult task of handicap secretary. May he rest in peace.
The members also extend deepest sympathy to Frances Colclough and her family on the death of her brother Michael Fogarty of Emly. And to Agnes Doolan and her family on the death of her sister Gabrielle Kelly in Banagher this week.
