Junior Golf
The Junior golf has started with very healthy numbers taking part each Monday morning. Great credit is due to the organisers who give up many hours of their time to take charge of the competitions. Much thanks to Michael Stephens, Liz Nolan, Aileen Watkins, Brian Guinan and Mary Bolger and several others who help out for all their work. On this Wednesday over 30 of our young golfers are taking part in the Tullamore open day. It is planned to have a similar open in Birr later in the month. Juniors should note that the Monday competitions will now start at 10 am. The tees are reserved from 10 to 12.

Ladies’ Golf
After a great run, our teams suffered failure. In miserable conditions Evelyn Lynch’s AA Senior Foursome team played magnificent golf on Wednesday to take 2 of the 3 matches in Tullamore, but sadly the result fell just short of producing victory, taking into account Tullamore’s previous performance at Birr. On Thursday, a wet Miele team, led by Rita Enright suffered a heart-breaking defeat by Gort. The match came down to a couple of putts. Saturday brought further bad news with Boystown gaining the upper hand in the AA Minor Cup – a closely fought contest, but alas, Birr ladies coming off 2nd best. Congratulations to all the ladies who brought these teams through so many rounds. Each team went far beyond the actual players at each match. Inevitably, players in all teams varied due to availability and form –very few team members will have played in every round of any tournament. In addition, the Minor Cup depended on the dedicated support of a number of Caddies; Lady President Bernadette McTague and Lady Captain Colette O’Brien were always there to support all matches, as were a number of members. Seeing support out on the course can lift a player’s spirits; so thankyou to everyone who has supported these teams. Teams for the Senior Cup Matches at the Curragh next Friday July 4th, as well as the Boyne Trophy 3rd round the following week will be hoping to resume the winning magic. Confidence is at an all time high for the future of both these teams as well as the Heineken Mixed.
The annual Loughnane Sisters trophy was played on Wednesday June 25th. There was an excellent turnout in spite of the inclement weather, and some very competitive golf was played. The event was won by Kathleen Maher (11) & Josie Burke (11) from Templemore with39 points; 2nd Sarah Baker(11) from Nenagh & Tory Baker(16) -Birr - 39pts; 3rd Margaret Cuddihy-Kenny(8) & Mary Kavanagh(9) from New Ross – 38 pts; 4th –Non Visitors – 1st Liz Nolan & Mary Lonergan 35pts 2nd Margaret Murphy & Maura Flannnery 34pts. €1,006 was raised from this popular open event for the Hospice in Offaly. How good it is to see so many visitors enjoying a wonderful day’s golf and a good cause benefiting.
Friday evening was enjoyed by Ladies and Gentlemen alike playing in a fun shotgun mixed competition over 12 holes. Kathleen Doorley & Tony McCormack won the event with 41nett, 2nd place went to Lady President Bernadette McTague & Tony McTague with 43nett (25 on back 9) and 3rd place to Liz Nolan and Ger Gath with 43 Nett (27 on back 9). After the golf, the evening was enjoyed with delicious barbecued food provided by Cathal McIntyre and his team. It is hoped this is only the first of such events.
Next Saturday and Sunday July 5th & 6th the Ladies’ Members’ Prize (Medal) will be played. Draw takes place for playing partners on Wednesday evening – members wishing to participate should ensure their name is on the form on the notice board before this. While entering, be sure to put your name down for the 2nd annual Tipperary Offaly Challenge scheduled for Sat July 19th. This is an event for players of ALL handicaps and a great social and competitive highlight of the club year.
